First Consultation with a Registrant

The first consultation normally takes place at the Registrant’s place of work and therapy play room. Please check beforehand if there will be a charge for this first consultation.

It is your opportunity to get to know the Registrant, how they work and if they have specialist experience in helping particular conditions.

One of the main purposes of the first consultation is an assessment to find out if your child is likely to benefit from play therapy or therapeutic play. This assessment, which will be totally confidential, involves completing a simple questionnaire which will take you 10 – 15 minutes to complete. The Therapist will then score this and discuss the results and the suggested way forward. In this initial session the therapist will also discuss any other relevant matters or questions that you wish to ask.

You would not normally take your child with you to this first consultation. Before therapy starts you will be invited to bring your child for an introductory session where he/she can see the therapy play room and all the exciting toys, objects and materials that it contains. The Therapist will explain the simple rules of safety and confidentiality:

“When you’re here you can do whatever you like, unless you are likely to hurt yourself, hurt me or damage the things in the room.”

“I will not tell anyone about what you say or do unless I think that someone is hurting you.”
